Volunteer Efforts in Lansing's Schools

In recognizing the number of financial cuts to the arts, and answer the call for promoting student creativity in the classroom, artist Julian Van Dyke has begun his "Volunteer Arts Effort" into some of the area's elementary schools in Lansing, MI.  He believes a strong arts program is a crucial component of a good quality school.  "We must support and continue the fight to keep art and creativity in our schools," Van Dyke says.  Volunteering what ever knowledge one has to offer is vital to our young students and communities,  Currently at Lansing School District's Pleasant View Magnet School for Visual & Performing Arts, Van Dyke says it's a win-win situation.  The students like my art that I bring in, and I am really impressed with their enthusiasm and creativity, and its really fun".

ART SHOW! ART SHOW! ART SHOW!

 Lansing School District and vandykeart.com

Opening reception for the art show “Peaceable Kingdom”, Animal, Nature, People will be Sunday, March 7, 2010  at Studio 1210 in Old Town. This art event put together by Lansing artist Julian Van Dyke and art specialist and teacher

Wendy McWhorter showcases the art work of students that attend Lansing School District’s Pleasant View Magnet School for Visual and Performing Arts.

“It’s really going to be a great show”, says Van Dyke. We all know the conversation that surrounds education, the funds being cut and school closing. Though art is very important to have in, it is usually the first curriculum to be cut out. And we realize that math, chemistry and english are very important, but the arts should be included in the equation to make everything whole. And if we can, just for one moment, step back and recognize the talent and creativity of our young student, maybe some of the gloom of conversing about education might go away…just for a little while anyway.”
